Happy 100th Day!!

We spent the day doing 100's of cool things: writing 100 words, coloring 100 grids, making 100's day bookmarks, making a chain with 100 loops, writing 100 places we'd like to visit, reading 100 books and having a blast in almost 100 different ways!

What We're Up To

Reading-every group is finishing fairy tales and beginning to read fables

Writing- blog writing (some kids have written their own fables), fairy tales, timeline writing for May's events

Math- continuing to add with regrouping and subtract with borrowing (using groups of tens), expanded notation of large numbers, reading and recording data on graphs

Social Studies-continuing our study of maps and learning about borders between states, countries and continents

Science-eagle observational writing (now the second egg has hatched!), beginning a unit on force and motion this week

Handwriting- writing more neatly, self-correcting backwards letters and numbers, concentrating on capitalization and punctuation

Open Circle-working on kind, caring acts, being responsible for ourselves

Read aloud-Charlotte's Web by E. B. White and many fairy tales

Extra-reading fairy tales, writing kind notes to one another, discussing earth day, beginning to plan how to use our garden plot and starting some seeds indoors

An Eagle Egg!

The nest we had been watching in White Rock, British Columbia has been abandoned by the parents. We're sad but have found another nest to watch in a town called Harrison Mills, British Columbia. This pair of eagles live in a tall tree on a golf course. We hope to see these babies hatch soon!

Eggs Laid:

April 4th and April 8th

First egg hatched:

Friday, April 10th

We're still waiting for the second egg to hatch.

It hatched today and we got to see the baby eaglet trying to push its way out of the shell!

Second egg hatched:

Tuesday, May 14th

Sadly, the second little eaglet didn't survive but the first eaglet is doing well and is getting huge!

Garden Notes

We haven't done a lot of watering lately as the rain is taking care of that for us! We do have a new set of watering cans for the school gardeners to share as well as some trowels, hoes and gardening gloves for working in our gardens. We have harvested some strawberries in our garden and other classes have come out and harvested a bunch of strawberries from the larger strawberry patch. We want to pick them before the birds do! When the rain stops we'll harvest some more lettuce which is getting huge!
